Dizzle BK Cuts Hair and Makes Records in the Same Week
One chair pays for the other. Four years into the crew, the barber and the artist are still the same guy, and one of his songs became a mountain.
Dizzle BK's page on this site has two buttons, the same size, side by side. One says book a cut. The other says message Dizzle about features, shows and anything music. He built it that way on purpose, and it's the most honest résumé on the site.
He's been part of the Spacedread crew for four years, making records and videos. When he's off the mic, he's behind the chair, cutting hair under the name BK Fades, booked through an online scheduler like any other shop. Nobody on the crew calls either one the side job.
Kryptonite
The clearest record of Dizzle the artist is the video for Kryptonite, released on October 23, 2022. It was shot by Spacedread Films and mastered by Kyle DaSilva, the engineer behind a lot of what this crew puts out. It's on his YouTube channel, @dizzlebk, and it's the video people get sent when somebody asks what Dizzle sounds like.
Four years ago that video was also a kind of audition, in both directions. A barber with songs met a crew that shoots, mixes and masters, and both sides found out what the other could do. He never left.
The song that became a mountain
Then there's BOUT IT, which Dizzle co-wrote with Cassius Crieghtney, and which had a stranger afterlife than most songs.
It turned into Mango Mountain: a snowboarding game in the Spacedread arcade where a run lasts exactly one song. You drop in when the track starts, and the mountain ends when the song does. Somewhere on that slope, the voice in your headphones belongs to a guy who might have cut your cousin's hair that week.
Why the chair matters
Across Canada, 71 per cent of artists hold more than one job, according to a 2024 survey by Hill Strategies Research for the Cultural Human Resources Council. Most of those second jobs get talked about like a weight. A barber's chair is a different kind of second job, and the crew's culture desk wrote about why.
A chair pays on schedule. Clients come back every few weeks. The shop is full of people talking, which is where plenty of lyrics come from anyway. And a cut is its own small piece of craft: a thing you make with your hands, that leaves the room with someone, that they get complimented on.
There's a line on his page about the chair that says it best: fresh before the shoot. For a crew that films constantly, the barber is part of the production.
