Sylus Rose Has the Room

Every good night has one person whose job is to decide how everyone else feels. At the Mango Mixer, Spacedread's TIFF-week party, that person is Sylus Rose.

Sylus came to the crew as a client and stayed as our DJ. When we needed someone to hold a room full of filmmakers, musicians and strangers during the busiest week of Toronto's year, he was the first call.

The look

Start with the photo at the top of this page, because Sylus chose it. Round gold sunglasses. A jacket built from panels of cream, emerald, indigo and burgundy. Chin up, looking past the lens. It's a portrait of somebody who has thought about what a room sees before the first song.

The second photo he sent is the opposite energy and just as important. Red folding chair, light blue shirt, teal boots, eyes on a laptop. That's the part of DJing nobody films: the hours of digging and ordering and cutting that happen so the five hours in public feel effortless.

The sound

If you want to hear him before tonight, his Linktree points to two mixes on SoundCloud: Make It Spark and For Your Consideration (Test Press Vol 1). The second title says a lot about how a DJ thinks: a test press is the first copy off the line, the one you play to check everything works before you make more.

What a DJ is doing at a party like this

The Mixer is a strange brief. It's a party, but there are short films on the screen and people who came to talk about them. It's TIFF week, so half the room just left a screening and the other half is hoping to meet someone who was in one. A DJ at a night like that has to leave space for conversation early, read when the room wants to move, and then give it permission.
