Inside Mango Mixer

A 30 minute premiere on the wall, Sylus Rose on the decks, paint on the easels, mangoes at the door and more than 50 people through the day.

It started in daylight, in a parking lot on McCormack Street. By the end, about thirty people were posing together in front of a garage door with a big number 8 on it. People came and went all day, and more than 50 came through in total.

Seen from inside the open garage door at dusk, guests gather in the parking lot between parked cars.
The lot starts filling.

The way in

Artificial turf. Potted palms. A white mannequin. A painting of two bottles and a mango on an easel. A red basket piled with mango cups. It felt like walking onto a set.

The entrance: artificial turf, potted palms, a white mannequin, a painting of two bottles on an easel, a red basket of mango cups and a table with a tropical print cloth beside a wooden loft ladder.

The room kept changing colour

Green, then blue, then red, then purple. Tall narrow paintings stood on light stands around a dark green velvet sofa. One of them was a single eye, watching the whole thing.

The music

Sylus Rose had the decks, and he killed it. The booth sat right in front of the paintings of a green one-eyed character, so the music and the art shared a wall. It was a vibe.

The films

One Take Jake premiered a 30 minute piece on the projection wall. Independent short films and music videos played there and on screens around the room. The film program had one rule: zero generative AI. Made by people, the long way.

Under red light, a film scene of two figures in a snowy park is projected onto a white wall. Two people sit at the DJ table in front of it, and a guest crouches by the stage lights.

The people

Tickets were paid for. Drinks were bought. And the camera roll is mostly faces: selfies, near kisses, peace signs, somebody sticking their tongue out while a basket of mangoes is shoved toward the lens.

A guest in a yellow top sticks their tongue out in a selfie while another guest in a tan cap leans in behind, tipping a red basket of mangoes toward the camera.
About thirty people pose together at night in front of a garage door marked with a large number 8, lit by one floodlight. Hands are up in signs and cheers, a guest in a yellow dress crouches low at the front and another in patterned trousers strikes a wide lunge.
