The Night the Audience Entered the Screen

Spacedread was running across a projector wall in Toronto. Then the room pulled out their phones and followed him in.

On September 19, 2026, at 115 McCormack Street in Toronto, the Spacedread world was up on the wall. Cas was steering Spacedread through it from the game side of the website, the way you'd walk a character through any level.

Then somebody in the audience worked it out. The world on the wall was the same world on their phone. They could get in.

They got in

People joined from their phones and appeared in the same world that was projected in front of them. Word moved through the room fast.

And then they did the obvious thing. They chased him. A room full of adults, holding phones, hunting a cartoon across a wall.

Then he went to the movies

Spacedread ran into the digital cinema inside the world, pressed play, and the real film festival carried on from inside the game. The screening in the room and the screening in the world were the same screening.

Under red light, a film scene of two figures in a snowy park is projected onto a white wall. Two people sit at the DJ table in front of it, and a guest crouches by the stage lights.

Why it matters

Explaining Spacedread usually takes a while. A world, a website, a character, a festival, a crew. On the night, nobody needed the explanation. The audience understood the idea by playing it.

That is the whole thesis of the Playable Media Festival in one moment: a screen you can walk into, with other people, while you're standing in the same room as them.
